Maneuvering Clearance at Doors...
Here is a quick review of some of the more important maneuvering clearance requirements at doors. I won't discuss every requirement in this article, but you can view all of the requirements by simply clicking the illustration to the right. Basically, maneuvering clearance at doors depends on three things: approach, door swing, and whether or not there is a closer.

When pulling a door open

  • When approaching a door head-on, 18 inches of clearance is required on the latch-side of the door.
  • If the approach is from the latch side, 48 inches of clearance is required in the direction of the door swing unless the door has a closer, in which case 54 inches are required.
  • If the approach is from the hinge side, the requirements are a little more tricky. Clearance in the direction of the door swing must be a minimum of 54 inches, with 42 inches of clearance required on the latch side. If clearance in the direction of the door swing is 60 inches or more, then only 36 inches of clearance is required on the latch side.

    When pushing a door open

  • When approaching a door head-on, no clearance is required either on the latch or hinge side of the door unless the door has BOTH a latch and a closer, in which case a minimum of 12 inches of clearance is required on the latch side.
  • If the approach is from the latch side, 42 inches of clearance is required in the direction opposite the door swing unless the door has a closer, in which case 48 inches are required.
  • If the approach is from the hinge side, clearance in the direction opposite the door swing must be a minimum of 42 inches unless the door has BOTH a closer, in which case 48 inches are required.

Here is an exception that could save you thousands of dollars, especially during renovations.
When you simply can't find an inexpensive way to provide the required clearances at a door, try installing an automatic door opener. Generally, automatic door openers eliminate the requirement for maneuvering clearance at doors!
